Xtreme Heights is sponsoring the boys’ and girls’ pole vault events at the second annual Milestat.com Elite Gala this weekend. The Gala will take place on June 9th and will be held at the Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, VA. The girls’ event will start at 3 pm and will be followed by the boys’ event. For more information please see the official meet website. Five of our athletes are scheduled to compete.

Caitlin, Betsy, Annie, Anne Marie, Hillary, CarolynLeading the field for the girls is Anne Marie Gordon with a best of 12’.  She is looking to improve on last year’s performance when just returning from an injury she placed 5th with a jump of 9 feet 6 inches.   Anne Marie has had a very strong outdoor season this year consistently flying over 12 feet and she will be aiming for a new meet record, which is currently 10 feet 6 inches.  Three girls jumped that height at last year’s inaugural Gala.  Among them was Xtreme Heighter Carolyn Lewis who took 2nd place honors.

Joining Anne Marie from our team will be Caitlin Walton and Hillary Parsons, both with bests of 10 feet 6 inches.  They have a great chance at rounding out the top three but they will be battling Eva Baker and Taylor Wuerker of TC Williams who have also jumped 10’6 this season.

Betsy Alter and Annie Powell competed at last year’s event.  Betsy took fourth with 10 feet and Annie shared fifth with a mark of 9’6.  Matthew 15Unfortunately Annie won’t be competing this year as she suffered a season-ending injury after winning the 2007 Central Region Championship with a new meet record of 12 feet.  Annie’s freshman sister Lizzie who has a best of 10’3 is also out for the season with a sprained ankle.

After an amazing performance at the State meet last weekend when he improved by a foot to jump 15 feet, Matthew Armentrout is the leader in the boys’ event.  Although Mike Morrison’s meet record of 16 feet 6 inches might be out of reach, Matthew has a great chance of taking first.  He will be going head to head with Cameron Sovick who has a best of 14 feet 6 inches.  Rodrigues Johnson of Denbigh and Aaron Zakula of East Forsyth are also contenders both having bests of 14 feet.

Last year, as a freshman, Matthew placed fifth with 13 feet.  He joined Xtreme Heighters Kevin Brinkley who was second with 15’1 and David Hively who was tenth with 12 feet.  David Hively, who has a best of 13 feet 6 inches, will also be competing at this year’s event.

Good Luck Xtreme Heighters!
