As expected, Anne Marie Gordon won the girls' event with a new meet record of 12 feet. This beat last year's record by a foot and a half. In addition to taking the top place, Anne Marie was also recognized as the "Elitest of the Elite" female field performer. This is a well deserved honor, as Anne Marie had a great year and was "the pole vaulter to beat" all season. She flew over 12 feet eight times this year and has set numerous meet and school records. With only the National Championships to go, Anne Marie's high school career is coming to a close, but it is not the end of the road. She will continue competing and setting records as a student-athlete at Duke University. We look forward to hearing about her continued success and wish Our girls also took the next two spots. Hillary Parsons improved her personal best by six inches to jump over 11 feet and earn second place. A rising senior at Douglas Freeman HS, Hillary is finishing up her first full season of pole vaulting. In true pole vault form, she was overhead exclaiming, "I love this pole!" after her 11 foot jump. This was her first meet on a new pole and it was a perfect fit. Watch for Hillary to be one of the top vaulters in the area next year! Taking third place was Caitlin Walton, a rising sophomore at Godwin HS. Caitlin matched her best of 10 feet 6 inches to secure her place on the podium. This mark puts Caitlin at the top of the Xtreme Heights Outdoor Freshman record board. Watch out for Caitlin as she becomes "the pole vaulter to beat" in the next Both Hillary and Caitlin will be back at the Sports Backers Stadium next weekend to compete at the VA Association USATF Junior Olympic Championships. Matthew Armentrout was the boys' pole vault champion with 13 feet 6 inches. He battled a head wind in his quest for first place. A rising junior at Deep Run HS, Matthew will join Anne Marie at National Championships next weekend. Keep your eye on him, as he continues to be one of the top vaulters in the state. Also jumping against a strong head wind, David Hively cleared 12 feet on his first attempt to tie for fourth place. Comments
