The Latest Outdoor News'Team Osipenko' hopes to vault to highest level 'Team Osipenko' hopes to vault to highest level By Fred Jeter TimesDispatch There are 33 track and field teams in the Central Region - 34 if you count the unofficial "Team Osipenko." Former Russian national team pole vaulter Val Osipenko will have particular interest in this weekend's state Group AAA vaulting competition in Newport News. Of the nine girls qualifying for the states meet (through region placement or by meeting state standards), seven train under Osipenko at XTreme Heights/GymQuest in Glen Allen. Osipenko's state-qualifying female pupils include Carolina Poma and Stephanie Oleson of Henrico, Hillary Parsons of Douglas Freeman, Sydney Hobart and Lizzie Powell of Patrick Henry and Caitlin Walton of Mills Godwin. On the boys side, Osipenko coaches state qualifiers Matt Armentrout of Deep Run and Spencer Aldridge and Eric Zwarycz of Godwin. Armentrout won the region title (14-6) last week and is the defending state outdoor champion. Another of Osipenko's disciples is Anne Marie Gordon (formerly of Godwin and now at Duke), the 2005 and '07 state champ. Val Sr. and Nadia Osipenko's children, Val Jr. and Vika, were vaulting champs for Atlee before earning scholarships to the University of Virginia. If area vaulters aren't in the Osipenko camp, they are apt to be aligned with Kyle Bishop of Mechanicsville. At his home training facility, Bishop coaches girls region champ Emma Dejarnette of Atlee and with state qualifiers Rachael Hawks and Cameron Overstreet, also of Atlee. Girls state vaulting is today, the boys tomorrow, at Todd Stadium. - Fred Jeter The dominance of the Central Region pole vault girls & two reasons or coaches why
The dominance of the Central Region pole vault girls & two reasons or coaches whyBy Brandon Miles Article The 2008 State Meet will mark the 10th time AAA girls compete for a state championship in the pole vault. In 1999 Carrie Bennett of Hayfield was one of the 39 pioneers who came to Norfolk State University to vault at the state meet. She would vault 10’6” to become the first girl’s pole vault state champion.
* Danielle Taylor of Cox High School from the Eastern Region in 2000 But in these last two years the sport seemed to evolve to another level in the Central Region. Central Region girls would win 3 of the last four indoor vault championships and Anne Marie Gordon of Godwin would tie the meet record in the event with her winning vault at last year’s state outdoor championships. This year 29 girls are entered in the pole vault. Eleven of these are from the Central Region. Of these eleven, six are found in the top seven seeds in the event. Two of the reasons for this evolution of the girls pole vault in the Central Region are, Kyle Bishop, the Atlee coach and Val Osipenko the Xtreme Heights Vaulting Club coach For the past few years vaulters coached by these two have battled not only for the regional championship but for the state championship. This year’s state meet will see this competition within a competition. Atlee Coach, Kyle Bishop has top seeded and state indoor champion Emma Dejarnette, 5th seeded Rachael Hawks and 6th seeded Cameron Overstreet. Val Osipenko and the Xtreme Heights Club is represented by 2nd seeded Lizzie Powell of Patrick Henry, 3rd seeded Caroline Poma of Henrico, and 5th seeded Hillary Parsons of Douglas Freeman. VHSL AAA State Meet Congratulation to all of our vaulters that competed at the Virginia State Meet! VHSL AA State Meet Congratulation to Nick Durante on winning the Virginia AA state meet. He jumped a personal best of 14-3 for the win. 2008 Outdoor District Meets Capital DistrictBay Rivers Nick Durante 13' 1st Ryan Garcia 10'6 4th Commonwealth Colleen McGlade 10'4 1st Southern Track Classic Preview by Brandon Miles Milestat GIRLS: Meet director Dan Ward did not have to travel too far to find the best pole vaulters in the state as the state's top two ranked vaulters are from the Central Region in Atlee's Emma Dejarnette and Patrick Henry's Lizzie Powell (pictured above by Tom Hoerner). AAA state champion Dejarnette skyed over 12'6" at the Taco Bell Classic in early April to move closer and closer to the state record held by Ashley Early, while Powell has moved out of the shadows of her older sister Annie to emerge as a great vaulter in her own right with a spring best clearance of 11'9". Six vaulters are entered at 11 feet or higher to set up for a deep competition on Friday. BOYS: The pole vault competition at Dogwood of the big three in Daniel Inge, Matthew Armentrout, and Allen Kelly which was postponed due to severe weather will now resume at a different meet two weeks later with all three vaulting very well heading into this weekend. Inge's 16'4.75" clearance last weekend leads the group and state of Virginia, but Armentrout cleared 15'6" last month and Kelly went over 15 feet cleanly last Saturday at the Suffolk Invite. 05/07/08 Henrico: Douglas Freeman: Five Forks Track Classic Matthew Armentrout 15' 1st Matt Ludvik 13' 4th Lissie Baker 8'3 5th Dogwood (UVA) 04/26/08 Kate Collins 10'9 2nd Jack Smith 13' 1st Norfolk State High School Invitational 04/19/08 Nick Durante won the meet with a jump of 14'.
