2010 VA AAA Outdoor State Meet Preview

Group AAA State Meet Preview - Field Events

Girls Pole Vault - Defending state champion and meet record holder Lizzie Powell (pictured right by John Herzog) of Patrick Henry returns one year later as the state record holder at a height of 13’3” and cancer survior to improve upon her 12’3” victory in 2009. Powell is followed by two other Central Region vaulters in Stephanie Oleson at 12’7” and Cameron Overstreet who can both best the current state meet record and also set the stage for state championship battles for 2011 when both return for their senior seasons. It could the first time in the meet’s history to see three vaulters over 12 feet.

Boys Pole Vault - Expect the unexpected in this event, but likely a champion to come from a group of four in Northwest Region champion and state leader Matt Hazelgren of Stafford at 15’7”, Central Region champion and indoor state champion Eric Zwarycz of Mills Godwin at 15’2”, Northern Region champion Matt Hoogland of Lake Braddock at 15’0” and top junior vaulter Chris Pillow of Atlee at 15’0”. Hazelgren was the favorite and top seed at the indoor state meet, but went out early to open up the door for Zwarycz’s unexpected win. Hazelgren will be looking for state meet redemption with an outdoor state title.

CAA Track & Field Championships 4-30-10

BRINKLEY GIVES RAMS THIRD STRAIGHT CAA WEEKLY HONOR

RICHMOND, Va. – Any time you can head into a championship with some momentum, it’s a very good thing.

That’s exactly what the Virginia Commonwealth University men’s track & field squad is doing after senior Kevin Brinkley (Richmond, Va.) picked up the team’s third straight Colonial Athletic Association weekly honor.

After breaking a school record in the pole vault for the second straight week, Brinkley was named CAA Field Athlete of the Week.
“The one word to describe Kevin is reliable,” Head Coach Julian Spooner said. “As a coach, it’s great to have an athlete that you know will always be in the discussion to win an event and that’s exactly what Kevin does every week in the pole vault”

This past weekend was no different as Brinkley lined up against some of the best in the country at the prestigious Penn Relays. He cleared 16’ 6 ¾” to break the school-record for the second straight week. It also equaled the height of LSU’s Thomas Reinecke and Joseph Caraway, but a jump off placed the senior third in the event.

Brinkley and the Rams will now look to bring home VCU’s first conference title since 2006 at the CAA Championships this weekend, hosted by George Mason University.

Kevin Brinkley 1st - 4.95m

Liberty Flames High School Invitational 1/15/10

"Lizzie Powell, Virginia's defending 3A state champion in the pole vault and more importantly, a cancer survivor, made her triumphant return to high school track & field on Friday in her first meet back after learning she had cancer following last May's outdoor state meet. While she is continuing to regain her endurance and strength lossed during the radiation treatment, she seemed pretty close to her top form and not rusty at all in her first meet back as she cleared 11'6" easily and made a good first attempt miss at 11'9" before missing the next two as the comfortable event winner. No competition or obstacle found at a track meet should pose as too much for the recent Virginia Tech verbal commitment to overcome after the mountain she climbed this summer and conquered this fall with the cancer in remission and Powell starting to become fully recovered."  By Brandon Miles

Kickoff to 2010 Indoor Season

It's a good start to another Indoor season!

Green Dragon Relays: Oleson clears US #2 11'6

We had several of our athletes compete in the opening week of the 2009/2010 Indoor Season.

Eric Zwarycz won the boys pole vault at St. Christophers with a jump of 14'.  This is his new personal best and the new school record!  He made a few good attempts at 14'3 to try to qualify for the Nike Indoor National meet.

Lissie Baker also jumped a new personal best of 9', along with Emily Alverez who jumped 7'6.

Caitlin Walton finally made her come back from a reoccurring injury (and Field hockey) for her first meet since last spring.  She won the girls section at St. Christophers meet, with a jump of 9'.

Justine Dutton cleared 9'6" in her first meet of the season!  This ties her personal best from last year.
